Watch the Universe Play Doom

DoomSat is a nonprofit small satellite mission designed to demonstrate two technologies in orbit: a student-built 3U spacecraft bus and an evolutionary computing payload. The DoomSat mission explores how computational randomness caused by the space radiation environment can be leveraged to enhance genetic algorithms for adaptive AI systems. By utilizing radiation-induced variability as a natural source of mutation, the payload system reduces the need for energy-intensive error correction while improving adaptive performance.

The primary DoomSat payload will autonomously learn to play and complete the game Doom, providing a structured and measurable benchmark for how evolutionary software can adapt, optimize, and operate efficiently under true orbital conditions. Space itself will play the game Doom through radiation-induced mutations, and this progress will be livestreamed.

DoomSat is currently in the design and build phase.
